The origin
Rain falling on the Gavarres and Selva hills sinks deep into fractured granite, where the earth's heat drives it back toward the surface.
It rises at Caldes de Malavella at around 60°C, already charged with the carbon dioxide and minerals it gathered underground.
1881
Doctor Modest Furest identified the thermal spring in 1881 and founded what would become one of Spain's most recognisable waters.
The Roman baths nearby had used the same waters nearly two thousand years earlier.
The composition
Vichy Catalan carries 1,066 mg/L of bicarbonate and 345 mg/L of sulfate at 308 mg/L total dissolved solids — a genuinely mineral water, not a light one.
Its carbonation is natural, with fine and persistent bubbles that come from the spring rather than a tank.
Today
It remains a fixture of Catalan tables, long valued after a meal for its digestive character and unmistakable saline finish.
