The origin
Snow and rain fall on Iceland's uninhabited highlands, where there is no agriculture, no industry and almost no human trace.
The meltwater vanishes into porous lava fields laid down by eruptions long before anyone lived on the island.
The highlands
Beneath Kirkjufell and the volcanic cones of the west, meltwater gathers in shallow falls and runs seaward over black basalt.
Nothing here is farmed and nothing is treated; the island simply moves its water downhill.
The descent
Rivers cut deep green gorges through the interior, threading mist and moss on their way to the lowlands.
